Kristin is excited to be returning to Maui Prep for her third year as Learning Specialist. Originally from New York state, Kristin lived for many years in Massachusetts, where she earned a B.A. in Linguistics from Harvard University and a joint M.Ed in Creative Arts in Learning and Elementary Education from Lesley University. She honed her skills teaching grades 1-6 at several urban and suburban schools, where she specialized in differentiating instruction for students with varying abilities and English language proficiencies. She learned to utilize a variety of teaching methods, including Responsive Classroom, 6 Traits Writing, Writer’s Workshop, and Fountas & Pinnell Guided Reading. More recently, she completed a certificate program from the Dyslexia Training Institute in implementing the Orton-Gillingham approach to literacy instruction and took coursework in helping students with ADHD.This year, Kristin is also teaching English to some of our international students. She brings to the role her experience as ESL specialist at Woodland Academy in Worcester, MA, a K-6 school with over 70% of students designated as English Language Learner (ELL). There she co-taught first and second grade, working with the lowest-level English learners and providing professional development for other teachers.

Kristin’s interest in ESL stems from a passionate curiosity about the world. She spent over a year in Thailand and many months in Latin America immersing herself in the language and culture, and at one point could converse in five languages. An avid traveler, she has volunteered in and/or explored countries on five continents, including Kenya, Mauritius, India, Uzbekistan, Vietnam, Laos, Indonesia, Japan, Guatemala, and Ecuador. Yearning to make more of a difference, she earned a second Master’s degree in International Development and Social Change.

When she’s not teaching, you can find Kristin exploring hiking trails, enjoying the beach, trying a new hobby, or playing Celtic fiddle. Her band, Glen Innes (“Valley Isle” in Gaelic), frequently performs at various venues around the island.
